Info & Frequently Asked Questions
We are located on Quinpool Road between Robie & Vernon Streets, a few door down from Video Difference, and right across the street from the old St. Pat’s Highschool.
Buses #6 & 20 stop on the street, and numerous other buses stop a few feet down the road on the corner of Quinpool and Robie, including the 7, 17, 18, 42, 80, 81, and the 90. The 1 & 14 stop at the corner of Quinpool and Oxford, a 5 minute walk away.
There is short term parking on Quinpool Road in front of the shop, and on the side roads in the neighbourhoods surrounding the area. The Quinpool Road Mainstreet District Association provides a convenient map of parking here.
We are open noon to 6pm, Tuesdays through Saturdays, and closed Sundays & Mondays. On occasion, we may close the shop a little early if we finish all of our tattoos ahead of schedule.
We accept cash and debit, but no credit cards.
Sorry, but we no longer offer piercings!
Though Utility started off as a piercing studio, we now offer tattoos exclusively.
Appointments & Policies
bookings** must be 18 years of age or older**
To schedule an appointment at Utility, call the shop or send us an email!
For large, detailed, custom, or complicated tattoos, we will set up a consultation appointment for you to meet with an artist to discuss your ideas and what exactly you’d like to get. Small and simple tattoos don’t necessarily require a consult, but are always available if requested. Our consultations are free of charge, so there is no harm in stopping in to meet with us!
We require a small non-refundable deposit upon starting a design and/or booking a tattoo appointment. Deposits are applied to the total cost of the tattoo on the final session, but are otherwise non-refundable in case you change your mind or cancel.
Deposits for most tattoos are $50 (+ tax), and bookings for large pieces will be required to leave a deposit of $100 (+ tax).
Please provide us with a minimum of 48 hours notice if you need to reschedule your tattoo appointment. Last minute cancellations and no-shows forfeit their deposit, and will be required to leave another deposit, double of the first amount, before a new appointment can be scheduled.
Aftercare & Prep
how to prepare for your appointment
Be well rested, eat well, and hydrate. Avoid drinking (too much) alcohol the night before – it’s a blood thinner, and getting tattooed with a hangover is not going to feel nice.
what to expect after your tattoo
In the first few days, you may feel a little soreness in the area you were tattooed. Swelling can be quite common, especially if the tattoo is on your arm or leg, and the skin will feel tight. As it heals, a thin layer of flaky dead skin will form on top – don’t pick or peel this!! Plan to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and don’t swim or soak in the tub while the tattoo is healing.
Soap: use a mild, unscented soap to wash your new tattoo while it is healing.
Aftercare: we generally recommend using a thin layer of a light, unscented moisturizer for most tattoos. If you normally have fairly dry skin, or if the tattoo is on a joint (for example, the elbow or knee) then we recommend using a product like Eucerin, or Flora to help with the healing process.
Do not use ointments, aloe vera, vitamin E, or Vaseline!
We carry Flora aftercare and locally-made soap in the shop for your convenience.
